Even as Saigon transitions from that charming Indochine pearl of days gone by to its new Singapore-wanna-be identity, Eating Saigon! continues to seek – and discover – among the traffic-jammed streets of Ho Chi Minh City truly classic and traditional Saigon street food gems.

Our most recent discovery, introduced to us by Hai’s Sisters # 3 and #4, and which certainly will now rank in our “Top 10” favorite Saigon eateries, is Nhân Quán.

Nhân Quán serves perhaps the city’s #1 bowl of hủ tiếu nam vang! As long-time readers of Eating Saigon! may recall, we have always loved the hủ tiếu nam vang at Đạt Thành in District 10. And, in fact, have typically made that our first destination after de-planing at Tân Sơn Nhất airport. And Đạt Thành still remains a favorite.

But, the truly flavorful nước lèo (soup broth) and the amazing amount of delicious goodies filling the soup bowl at Nhân Quán will likely make this Saigon eatery our new first destination upon returning to Saigon.

After enjoying a stroll through Saigon’s new and quite lovely “Central Park” layer out along the Saigon River in Bình Thạnh District, Hai and I and Sister #4 decided it was time to eat some hủ tiếu nam vang. Sister #4 said we had to go to her favorite at Nhân Quán. And who was I to argue!

I prefer to order my hủ tiếu nam vang, “khô”.  That’s “dry”,  meaning the somewhat sweet soup broth is served in a separate bowl from all the other ingredients.  You dip into the broth or spoon the broth over the bowl of meats and vegetables “as you go”.

And here at Nhân Quán, there were lots and lots of meats and vegetables to dip and enjoy. Pork liver, sweet ground pork meat, large firm shrimp, bits of cauliflower, green onions, quail eggs, bean sprouts, and an assortment of fresh herb leaves. For sure, order the ĐẶC BIỆT (special) to get the full assortment of delicious goodies!

OMG, delicious!

The hủ tiếu noodles were slightly chewy – as they should be – and absolutely delicious!

A “must try’ when you’re in Saigon!

Excellent, traditional food and, of course, great prices. [TÔ/STT = Bowl count; THƯỜNG = normal; ĐẶC BIỆT = special; HỘP = “to go”]

After a great meal, Hai, I and Sister #4 jumped on the bus across the street, and for 6000 VND (26 cents USA), enjoyed a ride home to our BonBon Residence on a comfortable, air-conditioned Saigon bus. Life is Good!
