A basket full of Chuối Nếp Nướng Nam Bộ
If you’re in Saigon, and can’t quite make it to the Mekong River Delta countryside, don’t despair. There’s still a way to find yourself inside a Mekong Delta bamboo shack (sort of) and enjoy a truly authentic and unique Mekong Delta dessert right here in Ho Chi Minh City.
So, there we were, Hai and I, buzzing down busy Phan Đăng Lưu Street in Saigon’s Phú Nhuận District at 10 PM one recent evening, heading back to our apartment (at the BonBon Residence).
“What in the world is that?”, I asked Hai, pointing back to a well-dressed woman in a conical hat standing in front of a “bamboo hut.”
Hai’s response, “Oh, haven’t we been there before?” – NO!
“Feel like dessert? – YES!!
“You gotta try it!”
OK, say no more … another Saigon treat was about to be discovered!
Little did I know we were about to enter the Disneyesque, award-winning world of Chè Chuối Nướng Út Lúa.
Dessert is served in a bamboo hut!
Almost closing time, we parked our motorbike in front of the shack and had the place to ourselves. We sat down at a small bamboo table, surrounded by potted bamboo plants, with walls covered in bamboo matts, bamboo cabinets and bamboo light shades (seems to be a theme here.)
The welcoming hostess assured us it wasn’t too late to enjoy her award-winning dessert treat – Chuối Nếp Nướng Nam Bộ.
I recognized the word, “chuối“, so I knew there would be bananas involved.
OK, we’ll take two. (I was about to find out that one would have been plenty.)
She unwrapped the banana leaf surrounding our unique dessert treat and proudly presented it to us.

A firm banana, coated with a char-grilled crunchy and chewy sticky rice shell, covered with a sweet coconut cream sauce.
Oh, Wow! Two words came to mind – DELICIOUS and HEAVY.
DELICIOUS and HEAVY
I mean – really delicious and pretty heavy. The perfect sticky rice shell coating was scrumptious. It reminded me of another “Mekong River Delta” sticky rice shell treat, Xôi Chiên Phồng, that we discovered some years ago at Quán Bảy Đực.

Selling this unique and special dessert on Saigon’s streets since 1995, Ms. Út Lúa has won World Street Food Congress acclaimes in China, Singapore and the Phillipines … and proudly displays the awards on her bamboo walls.
She told us that few tourists make it to her shop. But, it’s absolutely worth discovering this little bamboo shack and award-winning dessert.
