Saigon Cafes

Cakes and Ale Cafe … a gentle, yummy place to think, write and enjoy

Eating Saigon! readers may not be aware that about 95% of Eating Saigon! posts are written in Saigon cafes (not a big surprise, I’m sure). So, Yours truly has become, if not an expert on Saigon coffee shops, at least a local cafe connoisseur of sorts.

So, when I find my “fantasy” coffee shop in town, I’m quite a happy man … and anxious to share!

Trinh and Toan introduced Hai and I to Cakes and Ale … Cảm ơn nhiều

Share the fantasy!

Now of course folks’ fantasies vary widely. Some certainly are not suitable for our Eating Saigon!  family values website … although, our definition of family values is certainly far more inclusive than that of some Trump groupies … but I digress. Where was I? Oh, yes, fantasy Saigon cafes.

So, twinkle lights en masse have their place. And I love bamboo gardens as much as the next relaxed, retired  Ho Chi Minh City resident. And loud blaring music, well NO.

But what makes my fantasy Saigon cafe, when writing an Eating Saigon! post (like this one, for example) is:

  • Great internet
  • A comfortable table and chair
  • Great coffee, of course
  • A serene, comfortable surroundings
  • Decent AC (or at least a gentle fan)
  • A respectful, semi-quiet cliental.

The coffees are great, but try the teas here too!

I found it!!

Well, actually our good friends, Trinh & Toan, found it and introduced Hai and I to it – Cakes and Ale Cafe.

Cakes and Ale has all of the above plus a HUGE bonus …. an incredible selection of desserts and teas.

My favorite dessert – Passionfruit Cheesecake

Matcha Cheesecake

The tiramisu, the passion fruit cheesecake, the brownies – OMG!

So, if one is trying to track down the author of Eating Saigon!, one of your safest bets is drop by Cakes and Ale Cafe. If I’m not here, no great loss – you’ll have a happy time enjoying the coffee, the desserts, and the serene surroundings. And you can take the opportunity to pen your comment or two to Eating Saigon! about YOUR favorite Saigon coffee shops.

A worthy menu!

Hidden at the end of a small alley, but easy to find.  Just go to Ho Con Rua (Turtle Lake), look for the large Papa’s sign.  Walk down the alley under the Papa’s sign until you reach Papa’s front door.  But, don’t go in – go up the small staircase to the left of Papa’s to find Cakes and Ale.  However, for LGBT folk (or anyone else looking for a fun evening), you might want to spend sometime in Papa’s as well too enjoy the fun karaoke there!

Oh, and don’t forget to take a look at some of our other favorite Saigon coffee shops!
