Suspect battered by officers at Ho Chi Minh City police station

Nguyen Huu Phuoc, 22, with his buttocks a mass of welts after being allegedly beaten up at a Ho Chi Minh City police station on September 17. He also had head and other injuries.
Several police officers in Ho Chi Minh City face possible action for assaulting a man in custody so badly that he had to be hospitalized.
Lieutenant Nguyen Hoai Viet visited the family of Nguyen Huu Phuoc, 22, the victim, seeking their forgiveness and also identifying other officers who had joined him in the beating.
Major Bui Thien Thanh, who had been in charge of the police station in Binh Chanh District on September 17 when the incident occurred, faces censure for allowing it to happen, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Phuoc told his family that Viet tied him to a chair and hit him with a cane for hours before some other officers joined him.
Tran Thi Be, his mother, told Tuoi Tre that Phuoc had been summoned after the family of a 16-year-old girl accused him of having sex with her.
Be said her son went to the police station at 9 a.m. and the family was asked to take him home at 1 a.m. the next day.
Phuoc passed out outside the police station, and his family rushed him to hospital with multiple injuries from head to toe. His buttocks, fully covered in welts, bore the signs of a horrific beating.

Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital also found head injuries.
He was discharged after two days, and his family said he was constantly in a state of panic and screaming.
