Phở Hương Bình

They gave their lives so that we might enjoy a tasty bowl of phở gà at Phở Hương Bình

My exploration of the world of ph in Saigon may be never-ending.

Recommendations and advice from Eating Saigon! readers continue to pour in and reveal new eating phpportunities. (Sorry, thought that could work :-Đ)

In any case, friends at one of my favorite District 10 eateries, Mì Quảng Hội An, suggested that I try two of their favorite phở eateries – Phở Hùng and Phở Hương Bình.

Duty called! I immediately put both places on my “I must eat here soon” list.

If you saw my blog last week on Phở Hùng, you’ll recall that I was under-whelmed by that popular and well-located, but mediocre (in my opinion) phở bò (beef noodle soup) establishment.

However, my friends’ second recommendation came through big time!

Hai and I headed over to Phở Hương Bình for a late-morning breakfast two days ago.

Boiling phở gà (chicken noodle soup) for over 50 years, the folk here have indeed created a tasty broth. I could identify the distinct flavors of chicken, onion, salt, ginger and sugar as I spooned away my breakfast. The blend of these flavors in the sweetly-flavored nước lèo (soup stock) was a real treat. I found the phở noodles to be a bit mềm (soft/over-cooked), but the generous amounts of moist, light and dark chicken meat filled my tummy and made the meal, overall, a real treat.

Phở Gà at Phở Hương Bình – YUM YUM

Phở Hương Bình is a clean, well-lighted place where you can comfortably enjoy a tasty bowl of phở gà and peek at a few old photos from this 50-year-old establishment’s past.

A generous-sized bowl of ph gà cost us each 50,000 vnd ($2.50 USD).

  1. I went here today entirely on your recommendation. It did not disappoint. The chicken pieces were wonderfully tender, and oh joy, not with the fat and gristle I’ve encountered at other phở gà dispensaries. You’re right, soup stock is quite sweet; it took me aback at first, but it grew on me, and of course there are all the condiments to mitigate. A pleasant alternative indeed to the ubiquitous phở bò.

  2. Phở Công Lý : 288 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia P8 : Open from 5am to 10am

Phở is a breakfast item and this place really enforced this idea. The restaurant is reknowned for Phở eversince the Republic of Viet Nam Era, circa 1960’s. It is the place where all the brasses from the republic Era have breakfast. The restaurant is own and operate by Northerner family, bắc 54. Their bowl of phở looks ordinary, but the flavor is out of this world.

Note: this place is quite hard to find. It is located in the back of the alley….Furthermore, you gonna have to fight for a place to sit and eat :Đ
